About Filters

Update:

You might use filters, but do you really understand them?

Filter, defined, is a device that physically blocks objects or substances while letting certain others through. While filters are generally thought of for their filtering of water, they aren't used primarily for that.

Filters can be used to remove air pollution, to prepare coffee, or treat waste. The three primary uses of filters are in water, air, and oil.

Water filters remove the inpurities from water, normally by means of a physical barrier large enough to remove the inpurities, but small enough to let the water through. Not only used for drinking water, water filters can be harnessed in irrigation systems, aquariums, and swimming pools.

Air filters are made from fiber materials which removes solid particles such as pollen, dust and bacteria from the air. These chemical air filters consists of a sorbent or catalyst to remove airborne contaminents such as ozone or volatile organic compounds. These filters are used in areas where air quality is important, such as in building ventilation systems or in engines. Buildings tend to use foam, paper, or spun fiberglass to filter the air. A second method uses fires or elements with a static charge, which tends to attract dust particles. Combustion engines and compressors will generally use foam, paper and cotton filters.

Oil filters remove negatives from engines, transmissions, and lubricating and hydraulic oil. They are used in machinery. Most hydraulic systems are equipped with oil filters. Gas turbine engines utilize them, as well as oil production, transport and recycling facilities.

No matter the method or type of filter you use, they are important devices. They help us run better, whether that means by breathing better, feeling better, or helping the things that help us operate around us better. If you don't use filters in everyday life, there's a good chance your life is full of unnecessary containments that hurt and impair your life.
